All About Meal Accounts

Meal Accounts operate on a declining balance system.  Students are only charged for what they select and can use Meal Account funds anytime, anywhere for any on-campus food purchase.  Meal Accounts cannot be used off campus and are non-refundable.

Please see below for the following information:

Do I Need a Meal Account

Are You Living On-Campus? Are You Living Off Campus?
  • Meal Accounts are required for all students living in residence halls (including Appalachian Panhellenic Hall).
  • Residents of Appalachian Heights are exempt from the Meal Account requirement but may choose an option if desired.
  • Students classified as freshmen (by credit hours) must choose the Standard, High or Super Option. The Low Option is not available to freshmen.
  • Meal Accounts are not required for students living off campus.
  • If you would like to have funds on your AppCard for on-campus food purchases, you have three options:
    • Choose to purchase one of the above Meal Accounts.
    • Deposit any amount of funds into a Meal Account.
    • Purchase meals with an Express Account.
  • You can also use cash, Visa or MasterCard at any dining facility.

How Do I Open or Add to a Meal Account

Students living on campus choose an option each semester as part of their housing contract.  Meal Accounts will automatically be ready for use at the beginning of each semester for which a student is enrolled.  Students may change a Meal Account option prior to bill payment by contacting the AppCard Office (828-262-6141).

Adding funds to your Meal Account is quick and easy!

  • There is a $50.00 minimum to make a deposit online (Visa or MasterCard).

Because Meal Account funds are non-refundable, we recommend adding additional funds as needed.  Students are able to monitor account usage and check daily spending through AppCard Online.

AppCard FYI
Can I transfer money from a friend's Meal Account to mine?  Yes. Both students must bring their AppCards to the AppCard office.  Transfers may only be made from one Meal Account to another.  No Meal Account money may be transferred to an Express Account.

Where Can I Use It

Use Meal Account funds for any on-campus food purchase.  Meal Accounts cannot be used off campus.

  • All Food Services locations, including franchises
  • The Bake Shop
  • Catering
  • The Markets (campus convenience stores) for food and food-related purchases (Cash, Visa/MasterCard or an Express Account is required for non-food purchases)
  • Crossroads Coffee House
  • The Wired Scholar Cafe
  • Vending machines
  • Concession stands at home football games

How Does It Work

Because our pricing is a la carte rather than based on a number of set meals each day, students have complete flexibility of how, when and where to use Meal Account funds.

Spending Pricing Meal Averages
  • Meal Accounts operate on a declining balance system.
  • Students are only charged for what they select and can use Meal Account funds anytime, anywhere for any on-campus food purchase.
  • There are no restrictions on where funds can be used or the number of times per day (exception is a $40 per day limit on vending machine purchases).
  • Meal Accounts cannot be used off campus and students cannot withdraw cash.
  • Balances on Meal Accounts carry over from Fall to Spring semester and end on May Commencement.
  • All food items are priced a la carte (priced separately).
  • Students have control over how best to spend their funds.
  • Daily spending can vary greatly according to eating habits and selections.
  • Visit our Price Comparison to learn more about how our prices compare to those of area restaurants.
  • Meal averages are as follows (averages are based on the total number of purchases during the meal hours):
    • Breakfast ~ $5.50 including state sales tax
    • Lunch ~ $7.42 including state sales tax
    • Dinner ~ $7.58 including state sales tax
  • Note:  Meal Accounts are not designed to provide full meal coverage for a semester.  Additional deposits can be made at any time.

Because Meal Account funds are non-refundable, we recommend adding additional funds as needed.  Students are able to monitor account usage and check daily spending through AppCard Online.

AppCard FYI
What happens to forfeited Meal Account funds?  We work with students to reduce or eliminate forfeited Meal Account funds at the end of each academic year.  The percentage of funds that are forfeited is less than 1%; however,  unused balances remain in the Food Services budget to cover fixed costs that occur during the school year.
